Mulch layer
What is a mulch layer?
A mulch layer is a layer of material (e.g. wood chips) that covers the ground level.
Benefits of a mulch layer
Improving water management :
Water infiltration improves.
Soil dries out less quickly.
Soil decomposition is prevented.
Improving soil quality :
The organic matter content in the soil increases.
Soil life is stimulated.
The soil structure improves.
Soil erosion is prevented.
Flattening of temperature extremes :
In colder periods the soil is kept warmer.
In warmer periods, water evaporation is reduced.
Less weed growth
How to apply a mulch layer?
A layer of wood chips 8 to 12 cm thick is spread over the existing soil.
Optionally, a border can be placed to keep the mulch in place in windy conditions. Leaf litter can also be left there.
Applying a layer of cardboard under the mulch layer will further discourage weeds from growing.
What should you definitely not do?
Do not apply too thick a layer of mulch, as this will disrupt the oxygen balance in the soil.
Lay down a root cloth, because this disrupts the exchange between the mulch layer and the soil and plastic ends up in the soil.
Do not place the wood chips close to the trunk, otherwise they will become damaged.
